The Nutritional survey module enables the user to:
collect new nutritional and/or motor development data based on a sample of children (one record per child)
open, edit, save and delete surveys
import survey data files in *.WNS (WHO Anthro Beta version), *.DBF, *.CSV,*.REC, *.TXT or *.XML formats
export survey data files in *.TXT, *.CSV and *.XML formats
analyze anthropometric measurements using WHO standards and NCHS reference and summarize results of the 6 gross motor milestone assessments
produce standardized outputs of these analyses
On opening the module the column to the left shows the built-in example survey. Functions related to survey data sets can be activated via the icons on top of the survey list or via the menu bar under Nutritional survey.
To import a survey, select the action from the Nutritional survey menu bar and choose the file you want to import.
To export a survey, select first by ticking the box next to the survey's name and then choose the relevant action from the Nutritional survey menu bar.
To add a new survey, click on
. The window to the right becomes activated and the user
should enter a survey name on top (mandatory); the field for survey notes is optional.
To open a survey, first click on the name to highlight and then click on
. Consequently all child records in this survey appear
in the survey section to the right with the results in z-scores and percentiles
of the highlighted child record displayed at the bottom.
Colour codes related to severity levels alert the user if a child's measurement lies beyond certain cut-off limits. For example, red background appears for values between 2 and 3 SD, and black for values beyond 3 SD below or above the WHO standard or NCHS reference median.
Functionalities related to the open survey can be activated via icons at the top or via the menu bar under Current survey.
To add a new record to an open survey, click on
, complete the New record window and confirm by
clicking the <Save> button. The added record appears at the bottom of the
spreadsheet section and the lower part of the window shows the results in z-score
and percentiles.
By clicking the iterative filter function
the user can select a sub-sample of the current
survey for further analysis; clicking on
clears the filter.
To access further Options window click on
or go to the Current survey menu bar
and select Survey options. Here the user can change from default WHO standards
to the NCHS reference, specify ID assignment, age groupings and adjust the z-score
ranges admitted in the analysis. To confirm changes click on the <OK> button
and to return to default settings click on <Reset>. The options will return
to the default setting when closing the currently open survey.
The user can select several records by either holding down the left mouse click
and dragging over rows or by using the CTRL and left mouse click. To copy the records
to the clipboard, click on
. These selected records can then be inserted into any
other spreadsheet, such as EXCEL.
There are several data analysis options:
Anthropometry report: Standard includes for each indicator all valid z-scores while Restricted includes only records with valid z-scores across all indicators (restricted only applies to weight and height-based indicators). If applicable, the user can specify that the survey used cluster sampling and thus obtain appropriate analysis correcting the 95% CIs for the sampling design.
WHO Global Database: Produces an output in the standard data-entry format for the WHO Global Database on Child Growth and Malnutrition (see www.who.int/nutgrowthdb).
Motor milestones report: Summary report on the prevalence of non-achievement for each milestone and prevalence of composite failure, i.e. the proportion of all children who ever failed to achieve a milestone.
The menu icons on the top right work in a similar way as in any other Microsoft application and enable the user to minimize, resize to fill the screen and close the module.
